(Kenya, 2018, 82 mins, Cert. 12A, dir Wanuri Kahiu) Much celebrated tale of forbidden love between two young women, Kena and Ziki, amidst family and political pressures in Kenya: this is an African Romeo & Juliet for the 21st century. Banned by the Kenyan film board when director Wanuri Kahiu refused to change the ending, Kahiu then sued the government. The Kenyan High Court eventually lifted the ban, allowing it to be screened in the country for seven days only, where it played to packed out houses. A fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of African culture, critics called Rafiki 'a gorgeously haunting film that is equal parts heart-breaking and hopeful.' Bar open at 7pm. Film at 7.30pm, introduced by our curator. Tickets £7.50 online or on the door.
Fri Nov 29th: RAFIKI
